The Choir on tour in France, 2010
An opportunity for singers considering a choral scholarship at Oxford
New College Choir offers prospective choral scholars the opportunity to join the Choir for a service of Choral Evensong. We ask that you get your online application in at least two weeks before the earliest of your chosen dates. In order to get the most out of the experience you need to be singing at grade 7/8 standard (ABRSM); you may find information on our choral scholarships page interesting.
The Application
You will be asked to choose up to three preferred dates on the online application form. You might like to use the term's music list to help you choose these dates. If there is not yet a music list available for the term in question, please ensure your chosen dates fall inside university term time: broadly speaking this is 2nd week October - 1st week December, 2nd week January - 2nd week March, and 3rd week April - 3rd week June. The Choir sings choral services every day of the week except Wednesday during University Terms. There may be the occasional variation to this pattern. On Monday the service is sung by men’s voices; on Thursday we have a Sung Eucharist. Please note that your online application will need to be accompanied by a separate email from a parent, guardian or teacher to the Assistant Organist, Steven Grahl, giving their consent for your participation.
On the Day
If your application is accepted, you’ll be sent the music beforehand; please bring this music with you. You would need to be at the Song Room at New College by 5pm for the pre-service rehearsal at 5.20pm. Cassocks are provided, but you would need to be wearing a collar and tie, dark trousers and black shoes. The service is at 6.15pm (6pm on Sunday) followed by dinner in hall at 7.15pm (except on Friday and Saturday). Car parking details and maps of College and Oxford are available here.
If you are at all uncertain about the suitability of this scheme for you, or you wish to discuss it further before applying, please contact the Director Edward Higginbottom, who is always happy to hear from prospective choral scholars.
