                                            Choral Scholarships
Some of the Choir in France, 2010
New College is part of the Oxford choral awards scheme. Every year the College Choir recruits two or three singers, depending on vacancies (countertenor, tenor or bass). The choral scholars (sometimes called academical clerks) sing alongside the College’s six layclerks, who act as their mentors in the stalls. The top line is sung by boy trebles. Choral scholars take a full part in the Choir's work, which extends to high-profile recording projects and foreign concert tours. They are also given weekly singing tuition, paid for by the College. The value of the choral award is £300 a year, supplemented by professional fees. Choral scholars are guaranteed accommodation in College in recognition of their chapel duties. There are six choral services a week, each evening in University Term apart from Wednesday. As well as Choral duties, there is a host of other musical opportunities in College including New Chamber Opera (NCO) which provides young singers with the opportunity to get involved in opera productions, and close-harmony group New Men, who released their latest CD 'Take to the Sky' at the end of 2011. The College hopes to attract singers who have a real commitment to their musical development. At the audition there must be evidence of significant vocal potential and established reading skills.

                                            • There is a scheme whereby sixth-formers can join the Choir for an evening service, and find out first-hand what it might be like to be part of the team. Read more about 6th form opportunities.

The Director of Music, Edward Higginbottom, is always happy to hear in advance from candidates, and give advice. Former New College choral scholars are now enjoying high profile careers as soloists, some in leading opera houses. Others have jobs in sectors such as the law and IT. All leave New College with a fine voice and exemplary musicianship.

As a sixth-former, the thought of life as a choral scholar at New College was totally removed in my mind from what I imagined student life might be like.  Now, two years later, I’ve found how it all fits together.  The Choir sings an evening service six days a week during term – it sounds a lot. But as the well-worn phrase goes "If you want something done, ask a busy person". I’ve found that being a semi-professional musician has made me better with my time, and it gives a structure to the day which is so easy not to have as a student. I’ve ended up using what are probably the two least-used hours of my day (5-7 pm.) to do something I love doing – singing. The rest? Well, that’s the student life bit I imagined back in school…

Some will join the Choir with ambitions to be a professional singer in the future. There is simply no better launch pad: you’ll find yourself not just among fellow undergraduate singers but also seasoned professionals who will no doubt give you valuable guidance. You’ll learn the discipline of recording sessions, as well as touring abroad every vacation – in the year that I’ve been here, we’ve recorded two CDs and toured six countries, including the USA.  If your ambition is to enter the legal profession, no problem: you’ll end up a lawyer who can sing the socks off the prosecuting counsel.

So, even if a solo career is not at the top of your list, the experience of making music to the highest of standards is hugely rewarding.  Couple that with being a student at Oxford and it’s certainly something not to be sniffed at…
