The Choir of New College Oxford
Directed by Edward Higginbottom
In the final year of Edward Higginbottom as Organist, this 8-CD release brings together some of our best-loved disks - in particular Agnus Dei, the Gramophone Award-winning disk, and also Early One Morning, the recording of folksongs and spirituals, which - like the Pergolesi discs - had recently once more no longer been available.
For well over six hundred years now, the sixteen choristers and the clerks of the Choir of New College have sung to the glory of God in a rhythm of worship and education that has remained largely unchanged to our own day, except that their sound now reaches out across the globe.
Director Edward Higginbottom brings to the interpretation of a wide repertoire the skill of an experienced choir director and the intellectual grasp of a distinguished scholar. During his time at New College, the Choir has become a world leader in performances of music stretching from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary scores.
CD1: AGNUS DEI - Sacred Choral Music
Gramophone Awards 1997: Best selling disc
CD2: EARLY ONE MORNING - Folksongs and Spirituals
In the musical settings of these simple and artless songs, we bridge the gap between folksong as a museum-piece and folksong as a living and vibrant part of our own culture.
CD3: NATIVITAS - A Christmas Journey
A celebration of peace at Christmas, ranging from Palestrina to Poulenc.
CD4: AGNUS DEI II - Sacred Choral Music
"This is one of the most sublime choral records I have ever heard."
CD5: SANCTE DEUS - A Journey through the Renaissance
Works of Tallis, Lassus, Victoria, Guerrero, Gombert, Byrd, Desprez, Palestrina, and more...
CD6: IN EXCELSIS - English Choral Music from Taverner to Tavener
Celebrating the affinities bridging nearly 500 years of English music, works from the last years of the pre-Reformation are placed side by side with those from the late-20th-century flowering of liturgical music, inviting the listener to make connections across half a millennium.
CDs 7-8: PERGOLESI - Marian Vespers
This is the world première recording of an imaginative reconstruction of Pergolesi's Marian Vespers. Music from different stages in Pergolesi's career has been put together to form a legitimate sequence which may be called Vespers.
